Fruitland Chamber of Commerce
Fruitland is located in southwestern Idaho, near the Oregon
border. Fruitland is the geographic center or hub of the
surrounding cities of Ontario, Payette, Weiser and New
Plymouth.
U.S. 95 provides the central highway through the city, connecting
on the south to I-84 and north to Payette. U.S. 30 traverses
the city from New Plymouth west to Ontario, Oregon. Fruitland’s
elevation is 2,225 feet and is flanked by the Snake River
on the west, the Payette River on the north and farmland
on the south and east.
As its name indicates, Fruitland is the center of one of
the most productive fruit growing areas in Idaho. The original
townsite was 160 acres, homesteaded by John Hall in 1897.
Most of this area was planted in orchards of apples and plums.
The original brick two-story schoolhouse, built in 1909,
had four rooms - two upstairs, two downstairs and a bell
tower on the roof. The school adopted the motto “Poma
Terra,” or “apple land” in 1921. In 1928,
when the new high school was built, the bell tower was relocated
across the street to what is now known as the Olde School
Community Center which is home to the Fruitland Chamber of
Commerce, Community Library and other small businesses. Fruitland
was incorporated as a village in 1948.
Currently the population in Fruitland is 4,505. Construction
on the new Elementary school and improvements to the existing
schools were completed in August of 2007. The total enrollment
for the Elementary, Intermediate, Middle and High School
is currently 1,746. Fruitland High School, Home of the Grizzlies,
is proud to hold several State Titles and Championships as
well as achieving high academic standards.
